Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025 - Bhubaneswar

The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is scheduled for January 8 to 10, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.

17 Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) have already been held. The previous one was held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

Each year, there is a theme for the event.

The theme of the 17th PBD Convention was "Diaspora: Trusted Allies for India's Advancement in Amrit Kaal."

This is the first time Odisha is hosting this event.

As per the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas website:

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated once in every two years to strengthen the engagement of the overseas Indian community with the Government of India and reconnect them with their cultural roots. The 18th PBD Convention is being held from 8th-10th January, 2025 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The theme of the 18th PBD Convention 2025 is "Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat".

Those interested in joining can register for the event.

It is being well-promoted by the Govt. of India.

Dignitaries like the Hon'ble President of India, Prime Ministers, Ministers etc. will be attending.

Dr. S. Jaishankar, Union External Affairs Minister has extended his warm invitation-

This is a great opportunity to visit and discover Odisha - "India's Best Kept Secret."

Suggestions

We request the Odisha Government to serve and showcase the very best of our local, traditional, and GI products—handicrafts like Pattachitra and Pipli Applique Work; handlooms like Odisha Ikat, Sambalpuri Bandha, Khandua, Gopalpur Tussar, etc.; foodstuffs like Rasagola, Chhenapoda, Manda pitha, Arisa, etc.; agricultural products like Kandhamal Haladi, Kalajeera Rice, etc.; and manufactured goods, in addition to our rich heritage and culture.

Stalls must be set up, and the original products from local representatives- genuine artisans, weavers, and farmers should earn the deserving focus.

Pipli Applique lampshades are used to decorate during fairs and events in Odisha. While they are available in shops/malls in many cities like Sydney, Bangkok, Chengdu, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, etc, the Bhubaneswar airport must also have them.

It would be wonderful if all Odisha representatives wore Odisha handlooms during the event. Delegates must be encouraged to buy and wear Odisha handloom jackets, ties, stoles/dupattas, kurtas/kurtis, etc.

Some Thoughts

I always wonder about the spellings and pronunciation.

E.g. "Divas" means day. Some people write "Diwas" too.

As per wisdomlib.org, "Pravasi" means:

 Pravāsī (प्रवासी):—adj. living abroad; migratory; n. 1. immigrant; 2. traveller; 3. exile; banishment

In Odia, the word "Pravasi" is pronounced as "Prabasi" and "Divas" is "Dibasa." Some pronounce it as "Dibas."

Odisha celebrates many Dibasa- like the:

-> "Utkala Dibasa"- celebrated on April 1st each year.

-> "Pakhala Dibasa"- celebrated on March 20.

-> "Rasagola Dibasa"- celebrated on Niladri Bije- the last day of the Ratha Jatra.

-> "Dahibara Aloodum Dibasa"

-> "Chhenapoda Dibasa" etc

Seeing the website of the Odisha Culture Dept, Govt of Odisha, I did find "Prabasi" :)

But nevertheless, we must respect and follow-

One Nation, One Name- "Pravasi Bharatiya Divas."

Odisha Tourism has shared about the event- Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here-

"Bhubaneswar" and "Odisha" are misspelled by many.

Also, there is confusion regarding the spelling of Odisha's language and dance- Odia and Odissi, respectively.

The Spellings are- Odisha, Odia and Odissi-

We have been sharing about the correct representation and making everyone aware.
