They had set their eyes & dreams,
They wanted to explore new realms!
They had to conquer the seas,
They were willing to pay hefty fees.
The sea seemed vast and rough,
They were intrepid and tough.
They constructed vessels to sail,
Skills & constant efforts never fail!

When they started out on the sea,
It seemed to be a part of their destiny!
They were born to earn great glory!
Even today, the world loves their story!
Reaching new lands, with maritime trade,
Their memories will never ever fade!
This is about the Sadhabas- the traders,
The merchants of Kalinga in full force!
In those days when there was no electricity,
No compass, computer, or modern technology;
The Sadhabas still emerged victorious!
They sailed, they conquered! They're illustrious!

This poem is an ode to the Sadhabas, the merchants/traders of Kalinga, which is present-day Odisha in India. Sadhabas are still remembered for their intrepid journeys across seas and oceans and for establishing maritime trade in many nations. There was no GPS or any modern technology then! Despite this, they followed the stars and made history! Their example is so inspiring and illustrious! Even today, in Odisha, India, we celebrate festivals that commemorate our rich history and amazing maritime cultural heritage.

It is so inspiring to know what skilled sea-men could do ... a bit like the Vikings it sounds like.
ReplyDeleteLove the story you tell here!!! When you see those early ships and realize they had nothing but the skies to navigate with....it is truly amazing how they conquered the seas!
