Guru Padmasambhava- The Seven Line Prayer with Uddiyana- Odisha, India

Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, is hailed as the "Second Buddha".

He belonged to Uddiyana or Oddiyana. That is why he is called- Uddiyana Guru Padmasambhava.

Uddiyana refers to Odisha, India.

As per the Wikipedia-

Guru Padmasambhava's place of birth is disputed.

Most scholars believe he was born in the Swat Valley, Pakistan.

However, Guru Padmasambhava was actually born in Sambalpur, Odisha, India.

Some of the Himalayan Masters and Gurus of several monasteries and Buddhism experts like Prof Dr. Rabindra Panth of the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) know about Guru Padmasambhava's Odisha origin.

Recently, Dr. Wangmo Dixey, President, International Buddhist Association of America, shared a chant of Guru Padmasambhava with us. Following this prayer can remove obstacles:

This is the YouTube link of the seven line prayer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKG2oUIMFNE

It is great to listen and read and understand the words as there are English subtitles, too.

It begins with the words indicating the Lotus-born Guru Rinpoche's birthplace-
"Hung! In the North-west of the land of Oddiyana."

"ཧཱུྂ༔ ཨོ་རྒྱན་ཡུལ་གྱི་ནུབ་བྱང་མཚམས༔
hung orgyen yul gyi nubjang tsam
Hūṃ! In the north-west of the land of Oḍḍiyāṇa"

North-west of Oddiyana is clearly mentioned in the very first line of the prayer.

Oddiyana is present-day Odisha.

North-west of Odisha is Sambalpur. This can be seen from the present-day map of Odisha-

Sambhala is present day Sambalpur, Odisha, India.

This informative thread on X (Twitter) has more-

In the International Conference about Guru Padmasambhava held last week at Nalanda, Bihar, India, some scholars, authors and experts, including Sri Prabir Kumar Pattanaik shared information about Oddiyana/Uddiyana being Odisha, India.

More in this post- Guru Padmasambhava - International Conference at Nalanda -https://www.anitaexplorer.com/2024/08/guru-padmasambhava-international.html

Many are yet to know that it is not Swat Valley, Pakistan- unlike what is wrongly accepted and published now.

Changing wrong perceptions is very tough, as already many books and references point to Pakistan. It needs a lot of efforts and hard work to establish the truth and to ensure correct representation.

Uddiyana/Oddiyana needs to be rightly recognized as Odisha.

Odisha must earn her rightful recognition and due as the birthplace of this great Guru.

This is our prayer this Guru Dibasa i.e. on Teacher's Day.

We have been trying to connect with the Odisha Govt. for support to conduct a chanting event and conference about Guru Padmasambhava in Odisha in 2025.

Guru Padmasambhava has been a more prominent cultural icon.

Guru Padmasambhava was born, adopted, and raised in Sambalpur, Odisha, India.

He attained Mahaparinirvana in Udayagiri, Odisha, India.

A theme park and memorial with Guru Padmasambhava's idol and life-story, journey and teachings installation either at Sambalpur or Udayagiri must be planned.

This could be set up like the incredible Hiuen Tsang Memorial Hall in Nalanda, Bihar.

Under the able guidance and supervision of Prof Ravindra Panth, this memorial is a brilliant example of showcasing history and culture artistically, aesthetically, and collaboratively (international collaboration with China along with local participation).

Apart from Sambalpur, Guru Padmasambhava deeply connects with the Diamond Triangle's Udayagiri.

The Diamond Triangle deserves to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Due to its cultural and historical significance, major areas must be demarcated, conserved, and protected.

More publications, news reports, and events can inform, create awareness, and establish the truth.

This will have a great impact on the Buddhist heritage of Odisha and tourism in Odisha and India.

Also, treasures are yet to be unearthed in Odisha, as many of the heritage sites lie buried underground, and further excavation must be done.

Presently, Odisha still needs to be listed with the Buddhist heritage states.

The Mahapariniravan Express does not come to Odisha.

Odisha's Buddhist heritage sites must be included too as part of the Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train.

Else, new exclusive trains must be started connecting the Odisha's heritage as part of the route.

Have been sharing with the Govt. of India about the need to showcase our heritage.

"Jo Dikhta Hai, Woh Bikta Hai and Jo Bikta Hai, Woh Dikhta Hai"

With proper information and promotion, more domestic and international tourists will be drawn to explore. Bihar has been making significant progress.

As per this recent post, "Bihar is attracting more foreign tourists than Goa."

High-time Odisha graduates from being "India's Best Kept Secret."

When Guru Padmasambhava's ancient Seven Line Prayer still preserves the mention of "Oddiyana/ Uddiyana," what is preventing Odisha and India from rightfully claiming the geographical location?

Secrets like Guru Padmasambhava's real birthplace- Sambalpur and Mahaparinirvana- Udayagiri- need to be brought to the limelight for the world to learn and explore.

This is the collective responsibility of all. Government interest and support can ensure faster results in global acceptance.

Were you aware about Guru Padmasambhava & Oddiyana/Uddiyana- Odisha, India?
