Odisha Tableau - First Prize Winner In Republic Day Parade 2024

The 75th Republic Day was held with great pomp and show on January 26, 2024, at the Kartavya Path, New Delhi.

Odisha state's tableau has won the first prize in the State/UT category in Republic Day Parade 2024.

Traditional, local & GI crafts of Odisha were showcased.

Odisha Tableau was selected and could join the parade after 3 years.

The beautiful tableau had Pattachitra theme & art including Kandarpa Hati - i.e. elephant with figures in traditional Krishna Leela art.
There were other crafts like Pipli Applique Work, terracotta, coconut and coir crafts etc.

"Orissa Pattachitra" and "Pipli Applique Work" have the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag.

The art and term "Pattachitra/Patachitra" is very popular.

However, it is a cause of great concern that-
Other non-Pattachitra like Pot/Patua art of Bengal, Santhal art, Saura art etc are also using the same term Pattachitra and causing misrepresentation and confusion.
Care must be taken to use the own traditional and local name.
Pattachitra art is being done by Odisha's artists mostly in Puri and Khordha districts.
Pattachitra is also called- Patta Paintings or Puri Paintings.
Raghurajpur is one of the villages of Odisha that is famous for Pattachitra.

The Republic Day commentary for the Odisha Tableau mentioned "Raghurajpur" arts & crafts.

Raghurajpur earned an award for the best Tourism village last year.

Honourable CM of Odisha Sri Naveen Patnaik ji had shared about Raghurajpur last year in 2023.

He has also shared about Odisha State Tableau's win via his tweet.

Some points about the Odisha Tableau-

-> Pattachitra art is from Puri district and Raghurajpur
heritage village is one of the villages that is most famous for this art.
Every person is an artist in this village.

-> Pipli applique work is from Pipli village.
Pipli is called "Pipili". GI registration has been done with the name- "Pipli".

-> Dancers had worn "Sambalpuri Bandha" Sarees, a type of Ikat saree of Odisha i.e. "Orissa Ikat".
Both these handlooms have the GI Tag.
Further, Sambalpuri designs of Saktapar (Pasapali) were also painted on the Tableau.

-> Sambalpuri, a type of "handloom" is from many districts like Sambalpur & not associated with Raghurajpur village. Raghurajpur is famous for "handicrafts", more specifically-> Pattachitra.

-> Mentioning "Puri district arts & crafts like Pattachitra" & "Sambalpuri Sarees" would be more appropriate.
Such mention would be great in the commentary on Kartavya Path as many would have heard and learned the terms.

-> The broad theme was "Women Empowerment" i.e. Nari Shakti in Viksit Bharat.

Congratulations to all those associated.
The great efforts of those associated with Odisha Tableau have been recognised & rewarded.
