Today happens to be actress Kareena Kapoor Khan's birthday.
Recently, I re-watched her two decades old superhit Hindi movie- ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghum’ (K3G).
K3G was one of the early movies in her illustrious career.
Kareena Kapoor's performance in this blockbuster emotional family-drama by Dharma Productions is memorable.
She plays an ultra-modern, glamorous and smart college-going girl- Pooja or Poo, who lives in London with her sister, brother-in-law, nephew, and relative.
Poo does not like to be addressed as "Mausi".
The following are two scenes from K3G movie:
Scene I- Poo's conversation with her school-going nephew, Krish, in her introduction scene:
Poo: Hello, all you beautiful people!Nephew Krish: Wow Mausi! You are looking hot, haan!
*Poo’s expression changes*
Poo: By the way, Don’t call me Mausi!
Scene II: Poo's conversation with Krish after his school performance where he has surprised everyone:
Poo introduces Krish Raichand at the gathering after his performance-
Poo: Ladies and Gentlemen! The star of the show!
Poo: Hey Krish! You were amazing!
Krish: Thank you, Mausi!
*Poo’s expression changes*
Poo: Don't call me Mausi. Not here at least.
You can watch the entire scene on the production company's YouTube channel here.
The above were scenes from a movie where the characters play aunt and nephew.
Mausi Poo does not like being called as ‘Mausi' (Aunty) even by her own nephew.
These scenes show that ‘Aunty’ is not welcome even by some close relatives.
Even after being informed, should others continue using the same word- Mausi/Aunty?
I feel we should respect an individual's choices and call them what they wish to be called.
We must try to heed to their requests and try to make them feel comfortable and happy.
Do you feel it is absolutely fine to call any and every woman as- ‘Mausi’ or 'Aunty'?
Do you personally use 'Aunty' while speaking to random women (who are strangers)?
Why or why not do you take or not take such liberty of addressing them as- 'Aunty'?

Interesting.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading & sharing your feedback :)
DeleteWhile I don't call strangers aunty, I generally prefer Ma'am or just start the conversation with a hello. I do like the idea of calling relatives with the relation like mausi, chacha etc. We are family, and calling each other with the relation can help grow the bound. However, if there isnt much age difference or if they dont like it, then one should avoid.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you, Pooja. Thanks for sharing your views.
DeleteThis movie character was special & her request was quite something.
Usually, Mausis- as in those related by blood- are happy getting addressed as Mausi :)
Incidentally, her name too is Pooja in the movie. But, she likes to be called as "Poo" .
Own choice and what one wishes.
But, these days, perfect strangers start addressing such. I feel "Madam" or "Ji" is okay, but not "Aunty/Mausi/Chachi" etc!
