Ratha Jatra 2022 and Bahuda Jatra

Ratha Jatra, the anuual journey of Shree Jagannatha and His siblings, is celebrated with great happiness at Puri Dham, Odisha, and in many places worldwide where there are Shree Jagannatha Temples.

It is also called- Rath Yatra and Ratha Yatra.

The return journey is called Bahuda Jatra. Bahuda Jatra, also called Bahuda Yatra, was celebrated today.

Many people wrongly think that the deities enter the Temple immediately after they undertake the return journey.

Several other rituals are there while the deities are there on the Rathas.
This year, the rituals continue till July 12th.
Ratha Jatra 2022 Celebration Dates -
Ratha Jatra- 1 July 2022
Hera Panchami- 5 July 2022
Sandhya Darshan- 8 July 2022
Bahuda Jatra- 9 July 2022

Now that Bahuda Jatra is over today, we look forward to the following-
Suna Besha- 10 July 2022
Adharapana- 11 July 2022
Niladri Bije- Rasagola Dibasa- 12 July 2022
Rasagola (Rasgulla) is offered on Niladri Bije, the last day of the Ratha Jatra.
We celebrate this day as Rasagola Dibasa.

Odia food culture is associated with the Shree Jagannatha Temple, Puri and with many temples like the Baldevjew Temple in Kendrapara, Odisha.
Puri is called the Bhoga Kshetra as there are many varieties of bhoga/prasad (offerings) that are offered to the deities in this Dham (religious place of worship).

Each year, a specialty called Podapitha is offered on Bahuda Jatra.

My article about Bahuda Jatra was published in the Sakala, a leading Odia newspaper, last year- in the Sindura Ratha Jatra special-issue dated 18-24 July 2021.

🙏Jaya Shree Jagannatha 🙏
May Shree Jagannatha bless everyone.

  1. I knew about the Ratha Yatra in general. But not in this much detail. Thanks for this detailed blog.

    1. Thank you so much.
This post just has a bit about the return journey.
There is a lot that is yet to be shared. Had shared extra information and images in some of my previous posts about the Ratha Jatra.
Like many others, did you too believe that the Ratha Jatra is just for one day?
Each year, the rituals continue till Niladri Bije and conclude with the Rasagola (Rasgulla) offering.

    2. Yes, until now, I thought the Ratha Jatra is just for one day only. Even though things are changing now, until a few years ago the East and the South were not given any publicity, including history books.

There is a lot that we do not know. More awareness is needed.

  2. Being a Bengali, I have always been quite fascinated by the grandeur of Rath Yatra and Bahuda Yatra (Ulta Rath Jatra in Bengali) but I had no idea that the deities do not enter the Jagannath temple immediately after coming back from Gundicha mandir! Thanks for sharing the information. Till now my only source of visuals of Rath Yatra have been via DD Oria where the telecast ends around 6pm :) Wish to visit Puri during Rath Yatra some day.
