Exhibitions of Geographical Indications #OdishaGI #KnowYourGI #GIsofIndia #AToZChallenge

Geographical Indications (GIs) refer to the unique, reputed and special products of a geographical area associated with a particular community or communities, who are creating/producing these for a considerable time.
We have many unique products that have special qualities or characteristics. Some of these products have got the GI Tag.
“A Geographical Indication is an agricultural, natural or a manufactured product originating from a definite geographical territory”.

GI Registry awards such cultural products the GI tag on the basis of their application to protect manufacturers/producers.
GI Registry is a part of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. DPIIT has been promoting Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and GIs. GI is a type of IPR that is a community right.

Exhibitions are a great way to showcase these GI products. There can be many products from different geographical locations. Visitors belong to different age-groups and nations too. This is a great chance for networking and furthering business prospects. Plus, some of the exhibitions get good footfall and great media coverage.

Exhibitions allow engagement of industry & world governments can promote greater exchange of trade in services between India and the world. Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has been organizing and inviting artisans and producer groups to represent at such exhibitions.

The following are some of the GI Exhibitions that I  am proud to have attended representing Odisha:

1. GI Exhibition at BRICS Alliance Business Forum 2018 held at Taj Diplomatic Enclave, New Delhi

This was the first GI exhibition where I got to participate & represented Odisha's GIs products. I got to meet GI experts and GI Registered & Authorised Users from different states of India.

2. Exhibition of Geographical Indications of India at India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2018 held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
This was the first time Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, organised an exhibition with GI products from all over India. You can click the link to read my post.
3. Global Exhibition on Services 2019 held at Palace Grounds, Bengaluru
I am sharing extra information about the last GI exhibition in which I represented Odisha. I had the great opportunity attend thanks to DPIIT's initiative and invitation.

The 5th Global Exhibition on Services (GES) was held in Bengaluru from November 26-28 2019 by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govet. of India. Delegates from 100 nations attended.
GES was in partnership of Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), & Govt of Karnataka from 26-28 Nov 2019 at Palace Grounds, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
@GESINDIA2019
Geographical Indications (GIs) can be a major engine of economic growth & can contribute significantly in terms of GDP, foreign exchange earnings and employment. India has fewer registered GIs as compared to some other nations. Artisans, weavers & farmers must get the platform to further their business.
India’s tribal and rural products are popular among foreigners. Some are GIs and some others are potential GIs. Many Indian destinations have something unique to offer. We must engage in & exchange new business opportunities across boundaries.

Global Exhibition on Services gave an international networking platform for professionals and firms to connect, exchange ideas and do business together. With delegates from the world over, GES 2019 was a great experience.
We must strive to engage & exchange new business opportunities across boundaries through trade fairs and exhibitions.

I am writing A-Z posts about the Geographical Indications (GIs) of Odisha #OdishaGI.
GI products are linked with the culture, traditions, history, reputation etc. of a geographical location.
Only when info is shared, people can learn and be aware.
This is my sincere attempt to share information about the GI-Tags of Odisha.
You can check out my other GI posts here.
My previous #AToZChallenge posts here.

Are you aware of Geographical Indications?

Have you seen GI products in any exhibition?

  1. Hey, great job Anita. You're putting Odisha and its culture and creations on the world map. To be honest I think not many Indians themselves know much about the state.

    1. Thank you so much for your nice words. We are trying to showcase Odisha.
Actually, there is so much knowledge that the more one learns/knows, the more one realizes how little one knows.
Especially about Odisha & India, even I am amazed and still discovering everyday...

You are right that some people have poor knowledge about this part of the world. That's why this attempt to share and make people aware.
Geography & History lessons need to be properly taught in our schools. Our kids should learn about all the states and Union territories of India. And they should teach the elders :)

  3. You seem to have attended a lot of GI Exhibitions representing Odisha. I watched the video and could partially follow it as the language spoken was Oriya. Good for you and congratulations. These handlooms have to definitely be given a push for their survival.

    1. True. It is always great to promote our products. We need to care & share to make people aware and then they will take action to show that they care :) May the chain continue.

Yes, the first video shown by Zee Odisha news is in "Odia" language (kindly note- this is the new spelling -'Odia' & not 'Oriya'. name/spelling change was done in 2011)
The last video posted by GESIndia is in English. Do hope you saw that.

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Tina.
Odisha is the birthplace of many products like the Rasagola. People are in the process of knowing/will soon know once they learn more about Odisha.
