High-handed

It was amazing to see little Lina solving complex sums...
All the more as her parents were uneducated migrants.

Lina was born when they arrived in New Mexico for construction work.
A big market had been razed and a skyscraper was getting built in its place.

The first day Lina went to the site with her parents, she started crying.
Then, controlling herself, she started plucking apples from the tree.
The security-guard prohibited her.

Lina answered in an authoritative voice,  “I was the owner of this market. I had planted this tree the day I had set up the market.”

Do you believe in rebirth?

  1. Dear Anita,

Lina isn't one to reckon with is she? Apparently "she's" been here before.

  5. And who could blame her for picking the apples? Nicely done, Anita.

  6. No, I don't believe in rebirth, if you're talking about reincarnation. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a story about it :)

  7. If Lina had set up the market, she has all the right to pick apples.

  8. Lina has her own strength and that of her ancestor - not a combination to take 'No' lying down.

  9. Intriguing beginning that begs many questions. It will be interesting to see how her memory of a previous life will affect her experience as the daughter (I assume) of immigrants from across the border. Maybe her wisdom can make things better.

  10. I wonder if in time people, including her parents, will consider Lina of being a bruja, or, better yet, a curandera.

  11. I am inclined not to believe in reincarnation, but I haven't studied it at all so I'm not really entitled to hold an opinion! You give us an interesting snapshot of a moment in Lina's life.

  12. I don't disbelieve in reincarnation, but don't want it to be true. Don't want to come back. But interesting story.

  13. I don't believe in rebirth but I think it is a great topic for stories. This is very nicely done.

  14. Now that's one way to confuse a security guard. Nicely done.
