Nandankanan Zoological Park #AToZChallenge

Nandankanan is a beautiful Zoological Park that was established on 29 December, 1960, in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha.
The name 'Nandankanan' literally means the 'Garden of Heaven'.
Nandankanan is a combination of Zoo, Sanctuary and Botanical Garden.

Nandankanan is located amidst the lush green Chandaka Forest along the banks of the Kanjia Lake. The beautiful natural settings and the flora and fauna make Nandankanan one of the best parks and sanctuaries of India. The Park covers an area of about 362.1 hectares and the Sanctuary covers 437 hectares.

Nandankanan is a popular must-visit place in Bhubaneswar. Each year, Nandankanan attracts more than 3.3 million visitors.
Interested people can also adopt an animal from Nandankanan Zoological Park!

Nandankanan is the only zoo in India that has an Open-top Leopard enclosure.
White Tiger And Melanistic Tiger
Nandankanan has important 'firsts' to its credit:
1. First zoo to breed White Tiger and Melanistic Tiger
2. First zoo in India with a White Tiger Safari
3. First zoo in India where endangered Gharials were born in captivity

Nandankanan has the White Tiger Safari that is spread over an area of 12 hectares. Visitors can also see the Lion Safari of 20 hectares, Herbivore Safari of 21 hectares, and Bear Safari of 4.1 hectares.
With a large number of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, Nandankanan boasts of a rich and varied wildlife.

Tickets can be booked online here. Apart from the entry fees for children, adults and foreign nationals, there are camera equipment charges.
Note: Nandankanan is closed on Mondays.
When you are in Bhubaneswar, you must visit this paradise.

  1. this sounds really fascinating.. did not know about this park and since we were thinking of a trip to Bihar/Orissa in the near future, I will keep this in mind

    Talking of that, it's been a while since I visited a zoo, too. Time to take the kids to one, I guess.
