Dads Of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. And Chinky

The movie Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. is special and the protagonist is one of my favourite movie characters.

On Father's Day eve, I watched the movie for the umpteenth time and noticed the adorable Dads in the movie:

Dad#1- Munna Bhai/Murli Prasad Sharma's father - Hari Prasad Sharma - played by Sunil Dutt

Dad#2- Chinky/Dr. Suman's father - Dr. JC Asthana - played by Boman Irani

Dad#3- Dr.Rustam's father (who loves playing Carrom-board & is always  after the Queen!)

In the movie, there are heart-warming and touching scenes between father and "child" & Dad#1 & Dad#2 shed silent tears.

When Murli's father learns that his son has lied to him and he is no doctor (rather he is a dreaded goon/don called Munna Bhai), his self-respect is hurt.
Murli's dad sheds a silent tear.
Deeply hurt, he walks away from his son's home, leaves Mumbai and goes to his village.

Murli's dad learns of this reality after he meets his childhood friend, Dr.Asthana, who is Chinky's dad, and both the fathers decide to get Murli and Chinky married.

However, the proposal is called off after Murli's dad feels insulted knowing the reality from Dr.Asthana.

Murli vows revenge and gains admission to Dr.Asthana's medical college with the intention of harassing him and marrying Chinky.

As Dr.Asthana doesn't want his daughter, Chinky, to be married to Munna Bhai, he makes Munna Bhai interact with Chinky's ultra-modern friend, portrayed as Chinky. The fake Chinky succeeds in keeping Munna Bhai away! Dr.Asthana does not want his daughter's identity as Dr.Suman to be revealed to Munna Bhai.
However, Munna Bhai falls in love with Dr.Suman. He goes to Dr.Asthana's home to inform him that he is no longer interested in marrying Chinky. Dr.Asthana is relieved and asks Munna Bhai the name of the lucky girl whom Bhai would marry!

Munna Bhai says, "Dr.Suman!"
Chinky's dad must have shed a silent tear in his mind as his plan had been foiled and despite his best attempts, Munna Bhai had indeed fallen for his daughter! However, we don't find Dr. Asthana shedding a silent tear onscreen, rather he is shown laughing to control his anger and sadness.

At the end, it's realization time for Chinky/Dr.Suman's father and it's time for jadoo ki jhappi for Munna Bhai M.B.B.S and his father, who wears his pagdi proudly. He is proud of his son's achievements of bringing joy to people's lives. Time for tears of joy!

All is well that ends well!

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads, including mine!

  1. Jhadoo ki jhappi. I can't believe it's been 13 years of Munna Bhai MBBS. Watched during first year in college, and four times in theatre in Pune. Watched in the theater called Mangala. Dutt Saab is endearing so was Rustom Dad, rani ke peeche. Tension lene ka nahin tension dene ka. An epic movie which took the nation by storm,

  6. This read refreshed my memory of the movie...I had liked it very much..in fact most of India did..I am sure :) Nowadays mainstream movies don't show the father-son bond in this manner or is it that I am watching less Bollywood?! I see dysfunctional families at the center of family-oriented movies nowadays like Dil Dhadakne Do and Kapoor and Sons...hmm

  7. That's such an apt post for the day, Anita. The characters are all beautifully essayed in the film which makes it so heart touching. Indeed, it's one movie where dads have been an integral part of the story.

  9. Munna Bhai MBBS, I loved that movie. Sunil Dutt's father character was very special. And to answer your question, I don't remember a single instance when I was the cause of my father's tears.
