Silence, Darkness And Light

Dropping her line into Fool's Lake, she patiently waited for something to bite.
Her patience was tested as there was just no catch; it didn't seem right...

Photo Prompt: Mondays Finish The Story
It was night & she would have to return empty-handed to the palace,
What would she answer the Queen? Not accomplishing task is a disgrace...

She had to fulfill all the tasks successfully to be considered for marriage.
It was all her fault for falling in love with the prince & the challenge.

The prince would marry the one, who completed all the tasks before dawn.
The silence was deafening & the darkness overpowering as she was a pawn...

She wanted to be the winner as she had given her best in all the past days-
Without a frown, fought battles against silence and won wars over darkness.

For the last task, she hadn't a clue how to catch 101 fishes from Fool's Lake.
Were they venomous & wanting to fool? Was this challenge fixed or fake?

What would she deposit as her catch at dawn when they'd demand the fishes?
She decided that she'd be honest; though it might disqualify her wishes...

She tossed & turned that dark night when the silence was shattered by laughter.
She realized she was correct when she overheard the inebriated Queen's chatter!

As there were no fishes in Fool's Lake, the last task was to test character & honesty!
Who's the most truthful & not devious to tamper with results is what they wished to see!

As the realization dawned on her, she realized that it was a dawn that was bright!
Her explanation without manipulation dispelled silence & darkness with true light.

While the other girls proudly showed off their false "prize catch from Fool's Lake",
The Kingdom had found its future Queen- simple, sweet, sincere, honest & not fake!

  16. Nice story, Anita. I enjoyed reading it and you wrote it very nicely.
It does remind me of another (more I am thinking but can't remember titles, might have been a fable) with this theme, I believe it is a common story, with all of them wearing different clothing.
    Keep up the good work!!

p.s. I am returning your nice comment on my 'Letter "K"' Key West post at the end of January. This week, tomorrow afternoon will be the letter "M". I have a few Moscow and Melbourne pictures ready.

Thankfully, in this story, the honest girl wins while the rest of the girls tell lies & show-off their "fishes" perhaps procured from other lakes/persons!!!
      Glad you loved it.

    1. That's an interesting view, Donna!
They say- 'Everything is fair in love & war'. Then, the other girls adopted unfair means to get fishes from another lake as this lake didn't have any fishes. But, then, the Queen was testing who is honest & has a strong character! :)
Yes, I could have put those 2 sentences towards the end of the poem i.e. after dawn! The Queen would have announced what she was looking for & why she selected this honest girl!
