Death And Bollywood Movies

“Maut se kya darna, usey to aana hai;
Do din kee hai zindagi;  hume apna farz nibhaana hai”
-Lyrics of a song from the Hindi movie- Patthar Ke Phool
English Translation:
"Why fear death, it has to come;
Life is of two days (short); we have to do our duty."

As a child, I watched the Hindi movie- Jhuk Gaya Aasman and believed what's portrayed there as it was in tune with the stories I had heard. The hero dies and goes to the other world in a queue. There they refer to a huge book and try to locate his details- the page of his good deeds and bad deeds! That would decide his soul's future course!

The Hindi movie- Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic explains the points system with our good works adding to our score, while our evil works deducting it.

In Physics, I read that-
'matter can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only change from one form to another.'
Putting all the above together, I concluded that whatever good we do gets carried forward with our soul after our death.

So, what happens after death?

Hindi movies have dealt with the rebirth & reincarnation concept.

I loved the movies like Madhumati, Mehbooba, Milan etc in which lovers got united in the next birth.

Movies like Karz and Karan Arjun highlighted that the villains can't get away with murder & the heroes will have the last word. Great when justice and truth triumph at the end.

Many Hindi movies like Ek Tha Tiger show the "dead" as stars in the sky.

The movie- Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam portrayed the hero's dead-father as thunder in the sky.

In quite a number of Hindi movies like Bhootnath & Paheli, we have the dead conversing with the living and vice-versa.

In the recent movie- Alone, the conjoint twin, who dies after the operation and becomes an evil spirit, makes life difficult for her twin who has survived...

I loved the Hindi-movies- Talaash and Om Shaanti Om with a superb super-natural theme, in which the ghosts themselves serve as witness and help avenge their murders...

In other Hindi movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai & Mohabbatein, the dead heroines are shown on the same frame on the screen- that they are happy with the happy ending!

The following lines, from the Hindi Movie- Anand, express death very beautifully:
"Maut tu ek kavita hai...
Mujhse ek kavita ka waada hai milegi mujhko...
Doobti nabzo me jab dard ko neend aane lage;
Zard sa chehra liye chaand ufak tak pahunche;
Din abhi paani mein ho raat kinare ke kareeb;
Na abhi andhera ho, na ujala ho, na raat na din;
Jism jab khatm ho aur rooh ko saans aaye."
English translation:

"Death you are a poem...
A poem has promised me that we shall meet...
When the sinking pulse puts pain to sleep;
When the Moon’s yellow face reaches the horizon;
When the days are in water and the night near the shore;
Not yet darkness, neither light, not night nor day;
When the body is gone and the soul breathes (gets a life)."

I too believe- "Death is Beginning".

When you think of death, which Bollywood movie do you recollect? What do you feel about death? Please share in the comments below.

  1. Interesting post, but I do not know anything about bollywood movies, Anita. My concept of death is a life hereafter. I have a friend who thinks my husband and I were together in a previous life. Hmmmm.

  7. Zindagi to bewafa hai
    Ek din thukrayegi
    Maut mehbooba hai
    Apne saath lekar jaayegi
    Mar ke jeene ki adaa jo
    Duniya ko sikhlaayega
    Woh muqaddar ka Sikandar
    Woh muqaddar ka Sikandar
    Jaan-e-man kehlayega

    I recollect this beautiful song from Muqaddar Ka Sikandar.

    Thanks Anitafor the wonderful post by relating to bollywood movies.

  11. hahaha.. I love the bollywood angle you give in every (most) post.. Being a bollywood freak I enjoy your bollywood posts.. But talking about death I remember hindi serials.. where people die and come back with the same face, different face, different body and sometimes as ghosts.. hahaha.. I salute hindi serials for making death look so funny and hopeful where if one character dies we don't weep, we say "wait for few more episodes he will come back".. LOL

  12. Bollywood well you have mentioned it all but hey there was this one of Raj Kumar and Hema Malini and Rakhi...name Neelkamal. Death related movie. i just loved that movie...the songs...the plot...
    Death...well since i am a believer i believe we don't die...just the bodies die...just like we don a new dress and throw the old ragged ones...just like metamorphosis...something great happens...
    BTW the one movie i have ever enjoyed on death&ghosts was from Hollywood 'Ghost ' starring Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. Ooooh it was sooo romantic. Demi Moore looks great and that scene where she is doing her ceramic and Patrick enters and they make love...it's really...and just after he is murdered...
    After that he becomes a ghost but yet he tries to reach out to her and protect her from the bad friend of his who tries to get her. That friend actually killed Patrick...
    Did you see the movie Anita...if not download it and see it asap...meanwhile i am singing that song which plays in the background while she is making her ceramic pot, '' Oh My Love...My Darling..."
    On second thoughts here is that song with lyrics for you sweetie http://youtu.be/UQ0knAO2Qjs...enjoy :)
    Oh yess i enjoyed ur this post too.

  16. Hmm, it's true that death is the truth who ever takes birth has to face. But, it is hard that death doesn't tell in advance that it is coming! I lost my maternal grandpa last Sunday. It is true that he achieved everything in his life and he was all set to face death. But, the loss is for us who are connected to him. I still think, why it happens unexpectedly? What if we knew, he was about to leave? Why some words remain unsaid?

    Definitely death is beautiful... But, it should not be like plucking unripe fruit. Fruit has to ripe naturally and fall naturally, that's beautiful. If not, it is painful. What say?

    And don't to talk about ghosts... I am all alone at home :( :(

    1. You are very right, Sindhu. Am sorry to learn of your grandpa's loss...
      Very touching words & profound thoughts you have shared here. You must put them in a post...

      Death comes when it's time. The time can vary from person to person. Sometimes young lives are cut short... we have no answers...
      Whenever you feel alone, remember Him. He is there & will take care.
      May no fear haunt you! Keep smiling :)

  20. Apologies that movie i talked about earlier i was in a hurry was getting it all mixed up...it was not what i meant...that movie talks about some other issue...it talks about some kind of pychosis err paranoia or whatever that has deeply effected the main character of the story...the film starring Rajkumar, Hema Malini and Rakhi...the name is Lal Patthar.
    Neel Kamal has Raj Kumar reincarnated...and Waheeda Rehman...gosh it took me all this while...suddenly it brainstormed...this blunder that i did...had to correct it before others could.
    pls pls kindly bear with me. :)

  21. I am not very comfortable talking about death. I associate 'Anand' with this concept. It has positive connotations.
    Death is a reality and for me, it is a very emotionally taxing word.
