I have many fond memories associated with nursery
rhymes and stories that I had heard when I was a kid.
I knew many rhymes. During my vacations when we
visited my grandparents’ place, I was much in demand as everyone wanted to
listen to the superhit rhymes rendered by my sweet voice!
I had many favorites and I knew so many rhymes
that I was the cynosure of all eyes!
Some memories associated with the following two rhymes:
I loved the Itsy Bitsy Spider nursery rhyme the
day I heard it.
Itsy Bitsy Spider didn’t give up. It attempted
climbing and doing what it wanted to, despite the water playing spoil-sport! I was
happy when the Sun shone and dried up all the rain. Itsy Bitsy Spider got the
chance to climb again!
This rhyme taught me that never to give up hope
and to keep trying. I believe in this even now. When I was in high school,
I kept sending stories for publication in Tinkle magazine with the belief that even my story will find a place... Uncle Pai, the
editor of Tinkle, sent me many rejection letters with motivational stories
including Spider tales! After much trying, I was elated to succeed like Itsy Bitsy Spider as finally
my story was selected for publication! Thereafter, many of my stories got published…
The nursery rhyme Five Little Monkeys always
amused me. Being the nice and well-behaved child I was, I often wondered why
would anyone jump on the bed? That too after Mamma has called the Doctor & warned- “No more monkeys jumping on the bed!” When they fell off the bed & the
heads of all the monkeys got injured, I was first concerned about their
well-being. Then I thought- “Serves them right for being so indisciplined! How
dare they defy the elders? We should obey our Mamma. Hope the monkeys have learnt
their lesson. Hope they get well soon!”
I have never jumped on the bed as I felt it was
wrong and a good girl like me ought not to do this. Even if I did jump on the bed,
what if I suffer the same fate and head-injury as that of the monkeys?
Once when I had visited a neighbour’s birthday
party and my friends were jumping on the bed, I remembered the monkeys
in the nursery rhyme. I appealed to them not to jump on the bed as “ganda
hojayega” (It’ll become dirty) “Aunty ko jyaada kaam karna padega…” (Aunty
will have to do a lot of work…)
My Mom recounted this very proudly to all!Rhymes remind good times...

DeleteHow sweet, rhymes bring back my bachman memories too :) 'Bits of paper' and 'Old Mac Donald had a farm' were my favorite and I remember listening to five little monkeys with my nephew a few months back, its a sweet rhyme ^_^ Rhymes are taught to us in childhood for they carry great moral values :) Sweet post.

DeleteEven I was planning to attach my rhymes in my voice. My parents had recorded my rhymes. The audio-cassettes are very much there in my parents' home. I could not collect them & share.
